A. Proguanil, atovaquone proguanil, doxycycline and mefloquine do not cause problems in those with psoriasis. Chloroquine and chloroquine-related drugs can exacerbate psoriasis and should be avoided in those with generalised psoriasis or a history of such. Travellers with mild psoriasis can consider chloroquine if they are aware of the possible risks. The benefit of chemoprophylaxis with chloroquine may outweigh the risk of exacerbation of psoriasis, but each case should be considered on an individual basis.
RESULTS The scheme for transplanting marrow from primary animals with CML is shown in Fig. 1. Mouse DR-1 was diagnosed with CML on the basis of hematologic and pathologic criteria 13 ; . Bone marrow was transplanted into five syngeneic recipients pretreated with a sublethal dose of irradiation 450 cGy ; . Recipient mice were monitored by periodic sampling of peripheral blood and examined for clinical signs of disease e.g., splenomegaly, malaise ; . After several months of apparently normal hematopoiesis, mouse HL-2 became moribund 4.5 months after transplant. At autopsy, this mouse had an elevated leukocyte count 26, 250 cells per mm3 ; with a differential increase in granulocytes and immature myeloid forms and marked splenomegaly 0.54 g ; . Histopathologic analysis of the spleen Fig. 2 ; , liver, and bone marrow showed extensive accumulations of granulocytes and immature myeloid cells, consistent with a pathologic diagnosis of CML. After an initial period of apparently normal hematopoiesis, mouse HR-2 developed palpable splenomegaly and a mild leukocytosis 15, 000 leukocytes per mm3, with 50%6 immature cells and 40% granulocytes ; 3.5 months after transplant. Over time, immature blast cells came to predominate in the peripheral blood, and HR-2 was discovered dead 6.5 months after transplant. At autopsy, HR-2 was found to have a large thymic mass 0.49 g ; and leukemic blasts in the bone marrow. The leukemic cells in this animal stained positive for the T-cell marker Thy-1 Fig. 2 ; and showed rearrangements at the locus of the T-cell-receptor gene and germ-line configuration of the immunoglobulin , u-heavychain gene Fig. 3 ; . These findings are consistent with a diagnosis of acute lymphoid leukemia of T-cell origin. The remaining three mice later died with tumors of host-cell origin that did not carry the bcr abl retrovirus.

Permatogenesis occurs by complex interactions between germ cells and Sertoli cells 1, 2 ; . At the foundation of this process are spermatogonial stem cells that proliferate indefinitely. These cells have self-renewal activity and continuously produce progenitor cells, thereby supporting male reproduction throughout life. An important characteristic of spermatogonial stem cells is that they can reinitiate and reconstitute spermatogenesis after transplantation into a heterologous surrogate environment; microinjection of donor spermatogonial stem cells into infertile recipient testes allows donor stem cells to recolonize the empty niche to initiate donor-derived spermatogenesis in the recipient animals 3 ; . The recipient animals can then produce normal fertile offspring from transplanted donor cells 4 ; . This technique of germ cell transplantation provided valuable opportunities to use these cells for preservation of genetic information, genetic engineering, or infertility treatment 57 ; . Surprisingly, this process of donor stem cell colonization and subsequent spermatogenesis can occur in xenogeneic recipient testes. It was first demonstrated by Brinster and colleagues 8 ; in 1996 that rat spermatogonial stem cells can colonize and complete spermatogenesis in mouse testes. Although rat spermatogenesis was directly supported by mouse Sertoli cells 9 ; , the speed and length of the spermatogenic cycle of the rat remained the same in the mouse testis, which indicated that the rate of the cell cycle is determined by germ cells alone 10 ; . Furthermore, when mature sperm were retrieved from the epididymides of the recipient mice, they showed morphological characteristics of rat sperm 8 ; . The xenogeneic transplantation technique was later extended to other animal species, and spermatogonial stem cells from hamsters, rabbits, pigs, bulls, primates, and humans produced spermatogenesis to different degrees in mouse seminiferous tubules 1115 and atropine.

Abstract: Environmental conditions in mountainous regions have influenced the nature of some adaptations among small mammals and this may apply to strategies of habitat use in alpine biotopes. In the present paper, microhabitat use in relation to microhabitat availability of a population of snow voles Chionomys nivalis Martins, 1842, a nonhibernating microtine rodent that inhabits high-mountain environments exclusively, was studied. The results show that C. nivalis did not use microhabitats in proportion to availability, suggesting a preference for certain habitat characteristics. Chionomys nivalis strongly used scree areas at all times, whereas the use of available areas of mixed shrubs Juniperus communis and Cytisus oromediterraneus ; and Scots pine Pinus sylvestris ; was lower than expected. Factors other than food, such as favourable microclimate or refuge from predators, might determine regular use of rocky microhabitats. The results also revealed differences in the use of rocky structures related to sex and reproductive condition, suggesting different strategies of spatial use related to reproductive tasks. Juveniles and reproductive females used central zones of the scree and areas with scree junipers J. communis ; significantly more than expected, whereas reproductive males and nonreproductive adults used scree areas in proportion to availability. Based on its unique morphological, physiological, and ecological characteristics, C. nivalis can be considered a rock-dwelling specialist of alpine environments. Influence of HCMVon colony formation by hematopoietic progenitors. Our initial experiments were designed to determine the effect of virus adsorption and IE gene expression on in vitro BM colony formation. BM cells were infected with virus strains Eisenhardt, Towne, AD169, and RC256 for 12 hours, followed by examination for cell viability by trypan blue exclusion. The results indicated that under these conditions viability did not differ significantly between infected and mock infected cultures data not shown ; . Next, normal human BM cells were infected at a virus to cell ratio of 101or they were mock-infected. Table 1 contains data from four identical experiments using RC256 and a low-passage clinical isolate, Eisenhardt. Both strains of virus produced inhibition of BM.colony formation ranging from 30% to 70% depending on the colony type. Myelosuppression was more pronounced in IL-3-stimulated cultures than when GM-CSF was used as the source of colony stimulation. To evaluate the effect of multiplicity of infection MOI ; on the observed suppression of colony formation, normal human mononuclear BM cells were infected with either the RC256 or Eisenhardt strain of HCMV at virus to cell ratios of 101, 1: and 0.1: l infectious particles per cell. Parent bed. The bone marrow unit is equipped for long term patient stays so it was nice to have an extra bed for Macy to sit and roll around on. He was transfused and discharged by 11: 30pm. I watched several young patients in the arms of their parents walking around the small area in the unit. I thought to myself how hard it is for them and their families to have to go through what they are facing. And still, I saw smiles on the children's faces. We still have reason to be thankful. Colby is doing well today. He had horrible tummy pains this morning off and on. After having a bowel movement, it seemed to help immensely. He is on stool softener 2x a day and it is finally helping. He ate quite a bit of cereal for breakfast and just told me he wanted chicken and fries! We will have another cbc on Monday and hope his counts and Hemoglobin improve. As always, many thanks for all of the prayers and support for our family! With Love, Amanda and avc.
