Japanese barberry Berberis thunbergii DC. ; Figure 3 ; is a dense, woody shrub with numerous arching spine-bearing branches. It is a non-native species to North America, found primarily from Nova Scotia to Virginia and west to the Dakotas. It can be found in a wide variety of habitats, from open hills to dense forests [1]. Japanese barberry is often used as a garden ornamental because the leaves turn to shades of red and orange in autumn and its bright red berries persist until the following spring [2]. However, in certain rural environments, it has become a pest and has been known to inhibit native shrubs from flourishing. Common barberry Berberis vulgaris L. ; Figure 1 ; is native to Europe, but has been naturalized in the United States. The historical medicinal uses of barberry in both Europe and America include treatment for infections and as a bitter tonic [6, 7]. The roots are rich in several alkaloids including berberine [8]. This is the reason that barberry has been used as a substitute for goldenseal in herbal remedies. Goldenseal Hydrastis canadensis L. ; roots have been traditionally used by Native Americans for diarrhea, drops for earaches and sore eyes and as a wash for local inflammatory conditions. Today, it has been harvested to the extent that it is classified as "endangered" or "threatened" by the U. S. government in many of its natural habitats. Attempts to cultivate goldenseal have begun with some success in Oregon, Washington and North Carolina, but so far cultivated roots cannot supply the world-wide demand for this herb [3]. The antimicrobial activity of goldenseal is attributed to the alkaloid content of the roots, primarily berberine and hydrastine [4, 11]. Several alkaloids in goldenseal have been studied for their effect on oral bacteria [5, 11]. A comparison of alkaloid content and antibacterial activity of Japanese barberry with common barberry and goldenseal has been investigated to determine whether B. thunbergii might serve as a viable substitute for other berberine containing medicinal plants.

Amber had wanted desperately to go to America for some time, so when she was selected by Koru Care to travel to California for 2 weeks in May, her wish was answered!! After getting over the shock that Mum was not invited too, the countdown began. Amber was the only South Islander on the trip. She was sent north to stay with a friend who, on Saturday afternoon, took her to Auckland International Airport where Amber nervously met with 25 other children ranging in age from 9-14years, and 13 caregivers including nurses and a doctor. From the moment they entered the departure lounge and throughout Amber & her roommate Mahli the trip they were given heaps of stuff including backpacks, drink bottles, keyrings and clothing. A TV2 film crew trailed them for the majority of the 2 weeks to make a DVD, segments of which were shown on TV1 News. Their itinerary was jam packed with outings to California Adventure Park, 3 separate days at Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm, Anaheim Fire Department and California Highway Patrol CHiP's ; . There were special dinners and shopping trips too. The motel had a pool, which was fantastic, as Amber uses swimming as physiotherapy, and she came home with the added bonus of a topped up suntan! Some places visited were within walking distance of the Amber on CHiP's bike motel but others required quite some time on a bus. Fortunately, the group had a wheelchair that could be used by whoever needed it at the time - Amber certainly had her turn! Amber's return home was quite eventful - her flight from Auckland to Nelson was diverted to Blenheim by fog. A bus brought the passengers over to Nelson, but it was another one and a half hours wait! By the time Amber got home she was only able to empty her bags on the lounge floor, take a nap on the couch, stand up and walk to bed, effectively sleeping for 15 hours - any CF mother's worst nightmare!! No food, no drink.

Alternatively, addition of oviposition deterrents in stored water containers would prevent domestic breeding; however, it needs to be implemented by the entire community for prevention of Aedes borne diseases and benztropine.
